Here are some details on the most recent edition:
PROGRESSIVE POSITIVITY SPOTLIGHT

November 2010
HASSE FROBERG AND MUSICAL COMPANION
RANJIT BAROT

Download ProgPositivity's November 2010 Spotlight

Hasse Froberg and Musical Companion - Future PastYou know Hasse as the long-time lead vocalist for The Flower Kings. Over the last decade, there have been quite a few excellent song ideas that - for one reason or another - didn't fit into Roine's TFK albums. Hasse took advantage of a recent lull in TFK touring and recording to assemble the band "Musical Companion" as a vehicle for this backlog of excellent song ideas! Although the album features very melodic, solid rock with progressive rock flourishes and excellent guitar work, many listeners are surprised at how different this album is from a TFK album.

Ranjit Barot - Bada Boom

You may have heard Ranjit Barot playing drums on John McLaughlin's 2008 CD "Floating Point". Ranjit's debut solo fusion album is due out later this month. McLaughlin even plays a fiery guitar solo on this song "Singularity" from the album. Watch for Ranjit Barot's unique blend of jazz rock and Indian music at Amazon Dot Com and other online retailers!

Disclaimer: Ty Tabor's Rock Garden isn't a "prog" CD... But it *does* feature some nice songwriting, memorable melodies, arrangments, lyrics, harmony vocals... Oh - did I almost forget to mention *guitar*-work? ;-)

Ty took his time and made this one his favorite solo album yet. It is notably less melancholy than his previous solo album "Safety".

From http://www.insideoutmusic.com/
“Safety grew out of the worries and anguish that I lived through at the time,” Tabor explains. “With Rock Garden, I survived this phase and now I’m ready to rock again.”

BROWN SHOE - THE WHEAT PATCH

BROWN SHOE - THE WHEAT PATCH

http://cdbaby.com/cd/brownshoe

I stumbled across samples from BROWN SHOE's album THE WHEAT PATCH recently and was so immediately impressed by their subtle yet intricate arrangements and top notch production that I bought a copy. Upon first listen to the entire CD, however, I began to wonder if the songs were a bit too meandering and unfocused for my taste.

Then I caught the vision. The borderline-ambient nature of these vocal tunes only serves to magnify the impact of their sudden bursts into dynamic passages that are so catchy, intricately crafted and emotionally stirring that they deserve to be classified as indie-art-rock...

If you are looking for some nice background rock music that rises to the foreground to capture your undivided attention time and again... check out samples and more at CDBaby.

JULY 2006 - BLACK BONZO - LADY OF THE LIGHT

PROGPOSITIVITY FEATURE SPOTLIGHT
JULY 2006
BLACK BONZO - LADY OF THE LIGHT
Monday July 24th we played tracks from BLACK BONZO every hour on ProgPositivity Radio!
Drop by and request songs from their album anytime!
http://www.progpositivity.com/
http://sc4.spacialnet.com:13126/listen.pls

Although much is made of BLACK BONZO's unabashed revival of the classic Uriah Heep sound - and not without cause - my ears actually rate this material *above* that of the Heep. The guitarist even appropriates a nice Brian May guitar tone from time to time!

Guitar passages sing and soar... The songs are well written, produced and performed...

If you've ever wondered why Deep Purple, Queen, (and yes Uriah Heep) can't seem to put out the same type of cool vibe they did way back in the early 70's, you owe it to yourself to check out BLACK BONZO's 2004 CD "Lady of the Light"!

MAY 2006

TOTO - FALLING IN BETWEEN

http://www.toto99.com/

The band Toto returns to form with a new studio album brimming with creative energy, sterling musicianship, and - surprisingly enough - even some Proggie and Fusion moments!

One final note: For those of us that sort-of lost touch with Toto after Jeff Porcaro passed away in 1992... Guess who the band's drummer is *now*... None other than... SIMON PHILLIPS!!! He had impossibly big shoes to fill... but still... Phillips is a monster drummer in his own right... Great catch!

Without a doubt the *best* prog rock song about a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich I've heard all year! ;-)
Mark Stephens - ProgPositivity Radio
Ketan’s bass techniques often fulfill multiple roles, such as the illusion of synthesizers, rhythm guitar, or percussion. Vijay’s guitar sounds vary, from mellow chords, to chunky rhythms, to melodies that sound almost as if they’re being sung. The bass and guitar alternate, one leading while the other supports, and at other times they stand together. Dino’s drumming works hand-in-hand with Ketan’s bass, forming a solid rhythm section, which can be heavy, funky, or gentle, but always tight.
Ketan Bakrania- bass, vocals, and occasional percussion
Vijay Bakrania- lead and rhythm guitar
Dino Lopreiato- drums, congas, percussion, and backing vocals

A stunning, sizzling set of prog-rock-fusion tunes! This album takes me all the way back to the first time I heard Jeff Beck's "There and Back"! Mark Stephens - ProgPositivity.com

This week's feature Spotlight CD is
CROSS - PLAYGROUNDS (Progress Records)!!!

http://www.progressrec.com/cross/reviews.html

"As with 2000's Secrets, the highlight is the musicianship, which is of a classic modern progressive rock mould, with beautifully expressive guitars (Hansi Cross), shimmering percussion (Tomas Hjort and Cross), throbbing bass lines (Lollo Andersson), and beds of keyboards (Olov Andersson (Spektrum, Grand Stand and Cross). On the whole, Playgrounds is very good release, with a great sound (especially, for me, Cross' guitar playing). It's stronger in the instrumental passages, which make it an album to not overlook."RATING: 4,5 of 5::PROGRESSIVE WORLD::

When first getting turned onto this band a few years back, I felt almost priveledged to know about them, kind of the same way I felt when I first discovered the Dixie Dregs way back. Hearing such great musicians doing such clever music was like a treasure, and knowing that few people knew of them almost seemed criminal, yet the real fun part was turning my unsuspecting friends or ever strangers onto them, and seeing there reaction, which typically was that of curiousity and being impressed

FEB 2005 REVELATION PROJECT - s/t

PROGPOSITIVITY FEATURE SPOTLIGHT
FEB 2005
REVELATION PROJECT - s/t

From the frenzied anthemic progressive rock pulse of "Decay" to the quiet and pensive longing tones of "Promise", REVELATION PROJECT clearly is a band willing to explore vast musical territory in order to convey the mood of their album's storyline.

Although I'm a *fan* of concept albums, I'll also be the first to admit that many are collections of songs that seem either vaguely esoteric (Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'), rather loosely connected (Styx's - Kilroy was Here), or somewhat contrived (Spock's Beard's 'Snow'). Revelation Project's self-titled debut CD, however, is *none* of these. The storyline is surprisingly easy to follow. They even provide extra references to *assist* the adventure-seeking listener in following the plotline!

Hard rock fans seeking good musicianship, quality songwriting, melodic vocals, and prog-metal instrumental passages can find much to appreciate here!
